Accessing Your New Web Space

Now that you have received the confirmation email, you are ready to access your space on our web server (Beacon). The easiest way to access your space is with a FTP program. Salem State College does not provide this software, but there are numerous shareware and freeware FTP programs available online. Regardless of which software you use, you will need the following information:

Host Name:

Username:

Password:

(you should have just received this in an email)

Initial Remote Directory:

(faculty accounts only!)

Attention Faculty Account Holders:
It is important to include public_html as your Initial Remote Directory. All of the files that you want to be visible on the Internet must be in this directory.

Please Note: Only files that are intended to be viewed on the Web should be uploaded to the server. Do not upload your entire directory if it includes Photoshop (.psd) files or any other large files that are not intended to be part of your website.

Using WS_FTP

WS_FTP is available as both freeware and shareware and can be downloaded at www.ipswitch.com.

Configuring WS_FTP

Click the Connect button
Click the New button to create a new profile
Enter a name to describe your account
Enter "beacon.salemstate.edu" as the Host Name/Address
Enter your username as User ID
Enter your password
Click the Startup tab
If this is a faculty account. Enter "public_html" as the Initial Remote Site Folder
Click OK

Using CuteFTP

CuteFTP is a low-cost shareware program and can be downloaded at www.cuteftp.com.

Configuring CuteFTP

Select Quick Connect from the File menu
Enter "beacon.salemstate.edu" as the Host Address
Enter your username as the User ID
Enter your password
If this is a faculty account. Enter "public_html" as Initial Remote Directory
Click OK

Using Fetch (Mac users)

Fetch is one of the most popular FTP programs for Macintosh users, it can be downloaded at www.fetchsoftworks.com. Once you have downloaded Fetch, you may apply for a free license to Fetch if you are a student or employee of a public or accredited private school, college, university or academy.

Configuring Fetch

Select New Connection from the File menu
Enter "beacon.salemstate.edu" as the Host:
Enter your username as the User ID:
Enter your password
Click the small triangle to show more options
If this is a faculty account. Enter "public_html" as Initial Directory:
Click OK

Using Netscape Composer

Many people are using Netscape Composer to create and upload their web pages. If you have Netscape Communicator loaded on your computer, then you probably have Composer. It comes free with Communicator! Composer is technically not an FTP program, but you can use it to "push" your files to the Web.

Configuring Composer

When you are finished designing your page
Click on Publish
Enter a Title for your page
Enter a filename for your page
Enter the ftp location:

ftp://beacon.salemstate.edu/public_html

Department Accounts
ftp://trident.salemstate.edu/
Enter your username and password
Click OK
