Environmental Health and Safety Department

Salem State is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning and work environment for students, employees, visitors, and contractors. The Environmental Health and Safety Department is responsible for the compliance with air, water, and hazardous waste regulations, indoor air quality, asbestos, lead abatement, and fire safety.

Facility Inspections

The Environmental Health and Safety Department enlists the services of Triumvirate Environmental to provide hazardous waste disposal services as well as technical compliance services. A contract environmental technician is available on campus every other week to perform inspections in laboratories, waste accumulation areas, and mechanical rooms. Call 978.542.7115 if you would like to schedule an appointment with the technician to review your work area.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Hard copies of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available in the Office of Facilities Management. MSDS for specific departmental chemicals can be located in that department's office.

An important component of hazard communication is the maintenance of MSDS. In accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1910.1450, an MSDS must be readily available to employees in their work area.

An MSDS is a detailed informational document prepared by the manufacturer of a chemical. It describes the chemical and physical properties of the chemical as well as information about health hazards, toxicity, fire hazards, personal protection equipment, and spill control measures.

All known chemicals must be labeled in accordance with regulatory requirements. All unknown chemicals must be assumed to be hazardous, and appropriate precautions taken.
