I will be pIeased to answer any questions or concerns you have about the program, its requirements and the certification process.
The English Major - Secondary Education Minor prepares students for Massachusetts certification at the secondary level (9-12), Provisional Certification with Advanced Standing.
The current Flowsheet describes the sequence of study in the program, the requirements for entering the pre-practicum, and the practicum. It is important to note that EDU335-English Methods must be taken before you can petition to enter EDU498. All students are reminded that a minimum GPA of 2.5 must be maintained for continuation in the program. All certificate candidates must now take the MA Teachers Test in the subject matter field (English) before Provisional Certification at the Advanced Level is granted.
For candidates who already possess a B.A. degree in English, please contact me for advising and assistance in entering the Teacher Certification Program (TCP), a program created for people who have degrees and want to enter the teaching profession. This program is specifically designed to help candidates fill in the "gaps" in subject-matter content, accomplish the EDU requirements in a timely fashion (see Minor in the Flowsheet) and get the candidate into the field as soon as possible.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Beginning in January 2000, students seeking a high school [secondary] Student Teaching Practicum will need a 2.75 overall gpa and a 3.0 in their major field and in the Secondary Education minor.
