English Major/Secondary Education Minor
(36 Credits)
English majors who wish to teach at the secondary level (grades 8-12), must take the following courses designed to address the Massachusetts Department of Education requirements for the Initial Educator License.

English Majors wishing to teach should also take as many courses as possible in major authors and literary periods. Students should also consider taking Psychology and Education courses in language and cognition, language and development.

Additional Requirements
American
Government
Massachusetts statutes require all students seeking teacher licensure must have
at least one course in the constitutional basis of American and Mass.
government. You can meet this requirement by taking HIS
204, HIS
208, HIS 318, HIS
319, or POL
201. It is possible to demonstrate proficiency on an examination
administered by the History Dept.; course credit will be given for the exam.
Any course mentioned may also count toward your Division III distribution
elective requirement.
CORI
Requirement
Massachusetts law requires that all schools conduct criminal background checks
on current and prospective employees, volunteers, school transportation
providers, and others who may have “direct and unmonitored contact with
children.” Students must meet the Criminal Offender Records Information (CORI) requirements
set by local school districts in order to complete pre-practicum field work and
student teaching practica. Students unable to meet those requirements will be
unable to complete Education Department licensure programs.
