The English Major - Secondary Education Minor prepares students to teach at the high school level. Students who satisfactorily complete the program will receive a Massachusetts Intitial License to teach English at the secondary level (8-12). This is the mid-level license, one step above the Provisional License.
The current Flowsheet describes the sequence of study in the program, the requirements for entering the pre-practicum, and the practicum. It is important to note that EDU335-English Methods must be taken before you can petition to enter EDU498.
Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 overall AND a mininum GPA of 3.0 in ENG and EDU courses to be admitted to the Licensure program. They must also maintain those averages to stay in the program. All Licensure candidates must pass the Communications and Literacy portion of the Massachusetts Test of Educator Licensure (MTEL) before before being admitted to the pre-practicum course, and must pass the Subject Matter Test in English before the practicum (student teaching).
For candidates who already possess a B.A. degree in English, please contact the undergraduate coordinator for advising and assistance in entering the Teacher Certification Program (TCP), a program created for people who have degrees and want to enter the teaching profession. This program is specifically designed to help candidates fill in the "gaps" in subject-matter content, accomplish the EDU requirements in a timely fashion and get the candidate into the field as soon as possible.
