The
English Department offers first-year composition classes in which
students develop writing skills essential for success in college and
the workplace. In these classes, students write about important topics
for the academic community and other serious-minded audiences.
In doing so, students learn how to express their
own ideas clearly and convincingly while also considering the ideas of
others who have thought carefully about complex issues.
Composition
Requirement:
Most students
are required to complete two semesters of composition to fulfill the
all-college English Composition Core Requirement. Students in most
majors fulfill this requirement by completing ENG 101 and ENG 102.
English majors and Education majors are required to take ENG 103
instead of ENG 102. Students in the Honors Program may satisfy the
entire requirement by taking ENG 106H. Students whose first language
is not English may take ENG 101ESL instead of ENG 101, and they may
take ENG 102E instead of ENG 102.
Exemption
Policy:
-
Advanced
Placement Examination. Exemption from ENG 101 will be granted to
students who score a "3" or
better in the College Entrance Examination Board Advanced
Placement Examination.
Exemption carries three credits.
-
Scholastic
Aptitude Test. Exemption from ENG 101 will be granted to students
who (1) achieve either an SAT Writing score of 600 or above or an
SAT Essay sub-score of 10 or above, and (2) have a strong high
school record with an "A" average in English. Exemption carries three credits.
-
CLEP
Examination. The opportunity for exemption from ENG 101 will be
given to students who score 500 or above or the 50th
percentile or above on the CLEP examination. To obtain exemption,
these students must complete a departmental assessment of writing
skills. Upon passing this assessment, students will be granted
exemption and three credits.
