Pre-Practicum
Almost all education courses have associated field experiences and tasks. Introductory pre-practicum field experiences consist of focused observations of students and teachers, tutoring, and working with small groups. In intensive methods courses candidates assess learners, design activities that apply course concepts (e.g., guided reading, literature circles, and thematic units), and develop materials such as learning packets and WebQuests for students, parents, or other teachers.
Pre-practicum performance is recorded in an electronic Comprehensive Professional Development Portfolio (CPDP), which documents the growth of candidates toward NCATE, state and the Education Units proficiencies and in cooperating practitioner reports. To qualify for a student teaching practicum, students must have accumulated at least 75 hours of pre-practicum experience.
Students complete pre-practicum field experiences in urban, suburban and ex-urban schools and agencies. Placement can be made at one of the three Laboratory Schools associated with SSC that shall engage candidates in a variety of models of curriculum, instruction and organization.
Salem State education students have access to other sites for pre-practica, choosing from among the public school systems in northeastern Massachusetts and Greater Boston, where we enjoy strong relationships and partnerships.
