Fieldwork
An integral facet of teacher preparation is on-site fieldwork, where you'll learn firsthand from education professionals and get to observe and participate in the dynamics of the classroom. On the North Shore, we are able to grant you access to schools in a variety of communities—urban, suburban, ex-urban. We urge you to try a variety of field settings throughout your program.
Fieldwork is a component of most basic Education courses, and culminates in a semester-long practicum at the end of the licensure program. Placement can be made at one of the four SSC Laboratory Schools (the campus Salem State Pre-School, the Horace Mann School and Saltonstall School near campus, or the Ford School in Lynn, each with its own theme) associated with SSC, at another of our many cooperating schools, or at approved site of your choice.
In most of your pre-practicum field experiences, you will be carrying out assignments—observations, tutorials, small group instruction, lessons and units—linked to curriculum and methods courses in your licensure program. Besides these assignments, though, you will have the opportunity to explore different teaching-learning environments and watch yourself grow professionally as you learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required of effective educators.
If you qualify, you may complete one-half of your student teaching practicum in Yorkshire England, under the direction of faculty from both SSC and Bradford College in the U.K.. This student teaching abroad experience will contribute toward your state-approved program for licensure in Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, or Secondary Education.
