Education students are introduced to fieldwork in schools from the time of their first course in the department. Introductory courses ask students to observe and tutor in area schools. The 3-course "Curriculum Block" includes a substantial pre-practicum field placement in one of our laboratory schools or another local classroom, where assignments are linked to the teaching methods and materials demonstrated by course professors. Certification programs culminate in a semester-long student teaching practicum experience, supported by weekly seminars and regular visits by college supervisors. Salem State College's School of Education supports four Laboratory Schools:
The Horace Mann Laboratory School, located directly on the College campus, has a literacy curriculum theme and recently received a Reading Excellence Grant. The Saltonstall School is a yearlong break the mold school with multiage grades and with a curriculum based on multiple intelligence theory. Its special theme is science and technology. The National Association for the Education of Young Children nationally accredits our Preschool. Serving the children of SSC students, the state-of-the-art preschool curriculum uses Reggio Emilia and other constructivist approaches to teaching and learning. The Robert L. Ford School is an urban elementary and middle school with a culturally diverse population and a full-service school mission.
Students have the option of electing special practicum experiences in the science and technology oriented classrooms of PALMS (Partnerships Advancing the Learning of Mathematics, Science and Technology) teacher-leaders, in a local urban full-service community school, or in Ilkley, England through the School of Education's Student Teaching Abroad Program.
