The Salem State College Council on Teaching and Learning has been in existence since 1996.  Funded by the Vice President of Academic Affairs Office, the group originally had eight members.  Since that time, the membership has been expanded to ten appointments.  The initial chairs of the Council attended an American Association of Higher Education (AAHE) meeting to receive start-up ideas however, most of the Councilís initiatives relative to organization and programs were original ideas inspired by the needs of the Salem State community.

In its first year of existence, the Council on Teaching and Learning initiated three programs that are still strong components of the diverse programming that is supported by the Council:

  • Pearls and Perils - an all day conference for the entire college community on teaching and learning issues

  • Brown Bag Lunches - drop-in discussions on assigned topics relative to teaching and learning

  • Summer Grants - provides support to faculty and librarians in developing and testing pedagogical projects aimed at improving teaching and learning.
