C.T.I. Workshops "Tools for Teaching & Learning" Spring 2008
The CTI provides resources and support through many venues: individual consulting, workshops, presentations, learning circles, and online tutorials. We currently offer 2 workshop series, one focusing on tools for teaching and learning and the other on teaching techniques. The CTI also organizes special events for other departments on campus.

Salem State College faculty and staff are a treasure chest of information and we are extremely thankful to the many people who offer their time and expertise in teaching these workshops. The workshops listed here focus on new learning tools. Please contact the CTI (6137) if you would like to offer a workshop through CTI or have an idea for one you would like to see.

Recording and Editing Audio For your Courses (Audacity)
Learn how to use a free cross platform audio editing program called Audacity to design audio content for the internet/Blackboard or in multimedia presentations. Discusses applying audio effects and uses basic production techniques to manipulate sound files.

You can insert audio clips and video clips to your PPT presentations in only a few clicks, but there are some important considerations and some definite faux-pas that can make a great presentation go sour. We will explore the good and the bad of sound and video in PPT.

What's the Big Deal About Blogs
Blogs started as a simple way to create a webpage, and have morphed into an incredible tool for networking and professional development. Learn how you can form a 24/7 virtual conference in your field or with your students. In this workshop each participant will set up a blog and learn how to set the privacy level of blogs. We will set up a series of blogs that only workshop participants can see, while still allowing us to access the entire WWW.

Distribution lists (listservs) to promote community
Come learn how many departments at Salem State use email announcement and discussion lists (often known as Lyris lists or 'listservs') to promote community in classes, programs, departments, and other groups. Lists take many forms and can be used for a number of different purposes. If you or your department would like to learn how to set up and manage lists, you can learn in less than half an hour.

Video Mash-ups! (Mojiti)
Video has become an indispensable tool for teaching. Students and teachers are using video in more and more courses, analyzing it as they would a text document. New tools are making it easier to comment on video. We will use Mojiti to annotate videos on YouTube and share our commentary with each other.

Managing Written Work Using Google Documents
Google Documents and Spreadsheets) are powerful, versatile, and free tools that make collaborative work extremely easy. Students and professors can instantly pass student work back and forth throughout the semester, and a record of additions and revisions is automatically kept. In addition to handling the submission and return of student work, Google Docs can function as a student learning portfolio. Marc Boots-Ebenfield will demonstrate several tools including the calendar, spreadsheet, text docs and Google Reader. Jim Gubbins will show examples of his use of the document tool. Participants will create a Google account, Google documents, and share these documents with others-all you need to get started in using Google Docs for teaching.

How to Create a Movie Using Apple’s iMovie
Hands-on workshop which uses iMovieHD to digitize footage and edit video materials for the internet/Blackboard. Discusses how to apply titles, visual effects, transitions and audio effects. Note: We have loaner laptops with iMovie for sign-out! (Enrollment limited to 8).

Podcasting
Learn the basics of Podcasting. Participants will learn how to subscribe to podcasts, create podcasts, update podcasts and send the podcast link to students. Examples of podcasting in education will be provided.

Wikis
Collaboration is viewed as an important part of the process of learning. Information technologies are increasing our capacity to social network and collaborate. This workshop will explore wikis as one tool for collaborative learning. Participants will learn about how wikis work and explore their potential application in the classroom.
