C.T.I. Workshops "Special Events " 2007-2008
The CTI provides resources and support through many venues: individual consulting, workshops, presentations, learning circles, and online tutorials. We currently offer 2 workshop series, one focusing on tools for teaching and learning and the other on teaching techniques. The CTI also organizes special events for other departments on campus.
Evaluating Online Courses
In response to a request from Department Chairs and the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education, the Office of Academic Affairs is offering a workshop on evaluating online courses.
In this 90-minute session Marc Boots-Ebenfield (Director, Center for Teaching Innovation) and Gail Rankin (Director, Faculty Support Services/IT) will present proven rubrics for the review of fully online courses. These rubrics were developed by faculty as part of Maryland Online, one of the largest providers of distance learning, both as a development tool for faculty self-improvement and as a way to ensure the quality of online courses across institutions. The presenters will review a typical online course, discuss best practices in online course design, and show how the ideas in the Quality Matters Rubric fit the MSCA/BHE contract's "Distance Education Instruction Observation Form".
This workshop will be offered twice:

October 9: Jeff Butterfield. Sponsored by SSC Online and Academic Affairs. Professor Butterfield is Chair of the Computer Information Systems Department at Western Kentucky University. He has extensive experience teaching online and giving workshops on distance learning. Jeff will be coming to Salem State College on October 9 and offering 3 workshops (times and location subject to change):
- 11:00-12:00, Vets Hall. "Great Artists Steal" 45 minute presentation/15 minute question period. Open to entire campus community. Participants will learn specific, practical, readily-deployable techniques that they can use immediately in their traditional classes. On-line faculty will likely learn some new tricks as well.
- 1:45-2:45, Vets Hall. "But I Can't See the Whites of Their Eyes" 45 minute presentation/15 minute question period. Open to all faculty preparing and teaching online courses. One of the biggest mental hurdles that instructors face when developing on-line courses is how to test, evaluate, and assess students. Many professors believe that the only valid tests are those that they personally proctor in a live environment. This presentation examines the testing and assessment process and shares practical techniques with the audience. Tools and techniques for un-proctored tests will be shared. Alternative evaluation methods will also be discussed.
