 Learning Circles

Learning Circles
Learning Circles are low-key discussion groups focused on the use of a particular teaching method or technology. Learning Circles give participants a chance to share their work, highs and lows, with other people who share their interest. Conveners will seek a volunteer to share his/her work and kick-off discussion at each meeting, but anyone can share as time permits. Learning Circles will meet approximately every 3 weeks (3-5), at a mutually convenient time for members of the circle.

The CTI Advisory Committee will help us to decide which learning circles to launch this semester. Contact Marc Boots-Ebenfield (mbootsebenfiel@salemstate.edu, 6718) if you have an idea for a learning circle and/or would like to lead one. The CTI can provide a weeb page for the learning circle to post information and materials as well as a small stipend for snacks at the meeting.

Universal Design
[Elspeth Slayter (Coordinator), x7005, eslayter@salemstate.edu] Originally attributed to architecture, universal design is a process for creating education that is accessible to everyone.  Universal design theory uses research from cognitive science, instructional design and other disciplines to create lesson plans that are applicable to a large range of learning styles and disabilities. Brain research indicates that there is no clear dichotomy between ‘normal’ learning and ‘disabled’ learning, but rather a continuum of learning differences.  By following principles of Universal Design lessons become more accessible and more understandable to a large range of students and learning styles.
