C.T.I. 2007-2008 Workshops
The CTI provides resources and support through many venues: individual consulting, workshops, presentations, learning circles, and online tutorials. We currently offer 2 workshop series, one focusing on tools for teaching and learning and the other on teaching techniques. The CTI also organizes special events for other departments on campus. Our workshops are divided into several series and themes:

Learning Circles
Learning Circles are low-key discussion groups focused on the use of a particular teaching method or technology. Learning Circles give participants a chance to share their work, highs and lows, with other people who share their interest. Conveners will seek a volunteer to share his/her work and kick-off discussion at each meeting, but anyone can share as time permits. Learning Circles will meet approximately every 3 weeks (3-5), at a mutually convenient time for members of the circle. Contact Marc Boots-Ebenfield (mbootsebenfiel@salemstate.edu, 6718) if you have an idea for a learning circle and/or would like to lead one.

NextGen Course Design

A group of 5 faculty members will propose course redesigns to address the needs of "next These learners have been characterized as preferring teamwork, experiential activities, structure, and the use of technology. Their strengths include multitasking, goal orientation, positive attitude and a collaborative style. We will meet monthly to discuss common readings and how to meet course objectives in new ways for new learners. Participants will be expected to share their redesigned courses with the SSC community through a sponsored event (CTL, CTI, Academic Affairs).

Online Course Development Program (OCDP)

The OCDP provides faculty with the support and resources they need, both technical and pedagogical, to prepare existing courses to be offered in a fully online format via the WebCT system. Faculty meet regularly with an instructonal designer, instructional technologist and faculty with experience teaching online to discuss the pedagogical and technical issues involved in redesigning a face-to-face course for the online environment. The program includes a 3 week online session to experience online learning as a student, group readings and discussion. Participants are expected to share their work with the OCDP group and provide supportive feedback to eachother using a rubric of best practices for online course design. A call for proposals is issued in September. Applications will be posted shortly.

Seminar on Online Teaching-Advanced (SOTA)

For faculty members who have already taught online and wish to move their course to the next level of online course design. The program will consist of 4 days of presentations, workshops, supported work time and brainstorming sessions with colleagues. This is a new program. Details will be available late October. Applications will be issued late Fall Semester.

WinterTech
WinterTech is a 4 day intensive program on technology integration. It is offered in January and sometimes during spring break. The focus of the program changes from year to year. This year it was WebCT. Each day consists of a mix of training, presentation/discussion of best practices, time for individual work, and brainstorming. You are expected to bring course materials in electronic format, so you can work on your own course. Homework assignments are given each day in order to prepare you for the next day's work.

Laptop Bootcamp
Salem State has instituted a policy that all incoming freshman and transfer students must have a laptop. Laptop bootcamp gives faculty an intensive hands-on enviroment in which to learn of the many new resources available on campus for research and instruction. Faculty explore techniques for teaching with laptops and ways to get their students to use laptops effectively for learning. Participants in laptop bootcamp receive a laptop or stipend depending on their technology needs. The next bootcamp will be announced in March 2007.

Seminar on Stimulating Simulations

This new four-day intensive workshop will explore educational applications of simulaton games. Participants will design their own scenario-simulations in which students play a role in order to learn the subject matter. The design process will give participants new insights into simulations and new perspectives on teaching. We will examine the integration of simulations into courses, how to assess students progress and evaluate the benefit of simulations.

Online Program Development Initiative (OPDI)
The Graduate School is offering a number of grants to faculty interested in developing completely online degree programs through the Online Program Development Initiative (OPDI). The goal of the OPDI is to provide faculty with the support and resources they need to prepare existing courses to be offered in an online format via the WebCT system so that an entire degree program will be offered in an online format. Programs interested in going online should contact Dean Glasser.
