Library/Learning Commons

Construction of the new Library/Learning Commons

The contractor continues work on interior finishes and has started landscaping.

Demolition of the Existing Library Building

The contractor has begun mobilization and scaffolding installation for the upcoming deconstruction of the old library building on Lafayette Street.

Lee Kennedy Co., Inc. of Quincy, the construction management firm that has managed the Phase I demolition and the construction of the new Library/Learning Commons, will also manage the Phase II demolition that will take down the remainder of the former library building. The project team presented preliminary information regarding the projected demolition schedule, areas of work, demolition process, and measures to safeguard the South Salem environment at the March 27 Salem State University Neighborhood Advisory Committee meeting.

Click here to review the board from the neighborhood presentation. The orange line represents the work area for the demolition, and the pink arrows represent the truck route to and from the site. The numbers indicate the order in which the building will be deconstructed. For safety reasons, portions 1 and 2 of the library building will come down first. The open areas left from the deconstruction of these areas will be enclosed, and the contractor will then work from the back of the building, indicated by the number 3, toward Lafayette Street. Dust and vibration monitoring, as well as pest control, will continue throughout the deconstruction. A police detail will be on site once the actual deconstruction begins.
