Civic Engagement

Community Open House - Saturday, October 1 from 1 to 4 pm

President Patricia Maguire Meservey and Executive Vice President Stanley Cahill welcome you to Salem State University. Come see what’s new on campus, experience the quality of our programming, and learn what is available to you as a Salem resident. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

The open house program includes:

1–1:30 pm 

Open House Kick Off
Classroom Building Atrium, Central Campus
President Patricia Maguire Meservey and Executive Vice President Stanley Cahill will welcome you to campus. Check in at the welcome table in the atrium of the classroom building to pick up a full schedule of events. 

 1–4 pm Salem State Community Fair
Classroom Building Atrium, Central Campus     
Visit the community fair to learn more about what’s available to you as a Salem resident and what is scheduled to happen on campus this year. Exhibits will feature: Admissions, Alumni Affairs, Athletics, Center for Creative and Performing Arts, Center for International Education, Graduate School, Civic Engagement in the Community, Continuing Education and Non-Credit Programs, and more.

 1–3 pm

Children's Crafts, Marsh Hall Conference Center Lobby, Central Campus
Bring your children to Marsh Hall to make an engraved key tag or sand art craft. Children can choose from a variety of tags and have their names engraved on the spot or create a work of art in colorful sand in containers ranging from glass bottles, necklaces and honey bears to holiday assortments.

 1:15–2:30 pm

Modern Dance Class with Meghan McLyman
Dance Studio, O’Keefe Center Complex
This dance class will explore basic movement skills and fundamentals. It will begin with a floor warm-up, followed by standing exercises, and finishing with a dance combination. Find the joy of personal expression while eating up the space in full body movements. Most importantly, you will make connections with one another and have FUN! Wear clothing you can move comfortable in with no shoes or socks. No experience required. Not appropriate for children under 6.

Digital Storytelling and Digital Teach-nologies
Classroom Building Room 131, Central Campus
The Center for Teaching Innovation is displaying the many fascinating ways that internet and mobile technologies are changing teaching and learning. Come create your own digital story with sound, images and video to share with the world or put in a private space to share with your family and friends.

 1:30–2 pm     Pictorial History of Salem by Jeff Pearlman
Meier Hall front lobby
Jeff Pearlman is a seasoned educator of local history and geography. His lecture will take you through the fascinating history of Salem, Massachusetts depicted in the mural in Meier Hall.
 2 pm   

An Introduction to Gaelic Football and Hurling with Noel Healy, Seminar Room 129, Atlantic Hall, Central Campus 
Irish native and faculty member Dr. Noel Healy will provide a 20 minute overview on the history, cultural significance and rules of Gaelic games. He will introduce the world’s oldest and fastest field game, hurling, while showing the audience how to swing a Hurley stick. Following the overview - watch Salem State students play a demonstration Gaelic Football game for the first time on campus.

 2–4 pm

Children’s Activities with Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
Quad of the O’Keefe Center Complex
Join the SAAC for a fun afternoon of games and activities. Children of all ages welcome!

 2:30–3 pm

Knitting to Connect with Sheila Shea
Classroom Building Room 130, Central Campus
Come experience the excitement of a passion course! Discover why students, faculty, and staff have embraced the popularity of knitting on university campuses. With changes in the knitting industry, advancements in technology, and the commitment to civic engagement, knitters are building a community that is knitting for the common good. Hear how you too can be engaged in this campus initiative.

Resources at SSU Library
Classroom Building, Library Room CC185, Central Campus
Library staff will give an overview of print and electronic sources as well as resource guides and databases that are available at our library. Staff will also review library access for members of the Salem community and the services provided to the community by our librarians.

 2:30–3:30 pm Acting Class with Peter Sampieri, Mainstage Theatre
This fun and exciting class will explore some of the basic skills of acting and improvisation, beginning with ensemble-based warm-ups and improvisational exercises, and ending with performing in short scenes. We will identify and explore what makes a great actor and a great scene through laughter, experimentation, and open discussion. No experience is necessary. All ages are welcome.

 3–3:45 pm

Glassblowing Demonstration with John Volpacchio
Glassworks Studio, Enterprise Center
Professor John Volpacchio and his students will demonstrate a variety of glassblowing, and glass sculpting techniques in our state-of-the-art glassblowing studio. Stadium seating is available for 30, and adults and children are encouraged to attend. You will be fascinated by the potential of this magical material.
