SALEM, MASS. - The School of Arts and Sciences at Salem State College has formed a partnership with history teachers in Beverly as the result of a $999,052 grant.
A member of the U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee, and also an alumnus of Salem State, Congressman John Tierney spearheaded the grant and presented the check to the Beverly school system last month.
"It is critical that we continue our efforts to raise student achievement. I congratulate Salem State College, Beverly Public Schools, NARA and the Essex National Heritage Commission for bringing together their experience and expertise for this innovative project," said Tierney.
Through monthly seminars and summer institutes, Salem State's American history faculty will provide Essex County's school teachers with the support that they need to learn about ideas, events, and themes in American history, and to apply that increased knowledge to their classrooms and improve their quality of instruction.
The grant is based on the success of the "Salem in History" program, which offers courses to American history teachers in all of Essex County's middle and high schools. "Using Essex History" is a three-year project which will expand on the program.
