SALEM, Mass., Sept. 12, 2005 - Salem State College professors Dane A. Morrison and Nancy L. Schultz are the recipients of 2005 merit award, presented by the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) for their publication, "Salem: Place, Myth and Memory," published by the University Press of New England.
The book depicts the history of Salem and the experiences of 14 generations of people who lived there. It takes a look at the city as a local, national and global entity.
"We are excited to be recognized by the AASLH. It brings great national recognition to the city of Salem and to the faculty at Salem State College who contributed to the book," said Schultz.
"The award recognizes the importance of local history and celebrates the American experience as it is lived locally. Back in the 1960s, historians learned the importance of recognizing the lives of everyday people, and the text continues that trajectory," said Morrison.
Awards for 2005 represent 87 organizations and individuals from the United States. AASLH provides service and leadership to thousands of institutional and individual members. It is the only comprehensive national organization dedicated to state and local history.
