Salem State students plan canned-goods drive
SALEM - Students living on campus at Salem State College will play an active role in the local community Sunday, Sept. 11 when they visit parking lots at various grocery stores in Salem and Swampscott to collect donations for the Crombie Street Shelter.
According to Nina DeAgrella, a graduate student at the college who serves as a co-advisor for Residence Life, "Our students collected nearly 3,000 cans of food last year and our donation to the Crombie Street Shelter helped keep the shelter open for an extra week. We hope to do even more this year."
DeAgrella said the Salem State students are working to get authorization from store managers in the area and have received permission to set up collection sites at the Stop&Shop in Swampscott and Shaw's in Salem from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. "We will ask shoppers exiting grocery stores for a donation of canned or non-perishable food," she said. "Donations of money will also be accepted."
The canned-goods drive originated on the first anniversary of the September 11 bombings in New York City and is part of the college's official Day of Service, sanctioned by the National Association of College and University Residence Halls.
