Former St. Joseph’s Parking Lot to Handle Overflow
Salem, Mass. — In an effort to ease parking problems for students, faculty and staff, Salem State College recently reached agreement with the Office of Urban Planning to use the parking lot at the recently-closed St. Joseph’s Church for additional college parking.
The short-term lease, scheduled to run from September 2005 through May 2006, will make an additional 56,000 square feet of parking space available at the 135 Lafayette Street lot to students and employees of the college. In practical terms, this translates into approximately 102 additional spaces.
The temporary lot will be referred to as “St. Joseph’s Overflow Parking Lot at 135 Lafayette Street.” Shuttle service between the satellite lot and the college’s Main, Central and South campuses will operate between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The final shuttle of the day will leave at 4:30 p.m. lot will be secured each evening at 5 p.m. An emergency telephone will be installed on the property, and the Salem State campus police will patrol the area for additional security.
In the event of city-wide snow emergencies, Salem State plans to make the lot available to neighboring residents.
