Salem, Mass. - Using new "Smart Classroom" technology at Salem State College, the Massachusetts Department of Education is offering two four-day summer institute sessions to demonstrate to educators the importance of economic themes in technology-enhanced classrooms.
"Viewing the People and Places in the Commonwealth Through An Economic Looking Glass," will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Salem State College's new Central Campus Monday through Thursday, Aug. 8-11 and again Aug. 15-18. Follow-up sessions are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 and Saturday, Nov. 19.
Professors Margaret Landman of Bridgewater State College and Dorothy Siden of Salem State College, along with George Guild, director of economic education at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, are the lead presenters. They, in addition to several session presenters, will introduce classroom themes for third and fourth graders based on economics. All educators are eligible to participate. According to Siden, "Priority is given to teachers from high-need districts and for those educators who need to become highly qualified in the subject area that they teach."
A $200 stipend and 67.5 professional development points (PDPs) toward re-certification will be awarded to each participant. Optional graduate credit is also available through Salem State College.
For more information or to register, contact Siden at (978) 542-6681 or email her at dorothy.siden@salemstate.edu. An application can be downloaded from the Web at www.salemstate.edu/economics.
