Tsongas scholars are selected while in high school and demonstrate academic leadership and attain a grade point average of at least 3.75 or an academic rank in the top 10 percent of their class.
"Students who receive the Tsongas Scholarship tend to be our most active leaders," said Rod Kessler, professor of English and coordinator of the Honors Program at Salem State College. "I can rely on them to be excellent role models for our students." The Tsongas Scholarship is considered the most prestigious honor given to students at Salem State College.
The Tsongas Scholarship Program was established in 1998, offering the state's top high school students scholarships that cover in-state tuition and mandatory fees for up to four years. The awards are merit-based and will amount to approximately $5,100 per student annually. All nine Massachusetts's state colleges participate in the Tsongas Scholarship Program.
