Local residents honored at Salem State College

SALEM, Mass. - The following students were inducted into Phi Alpha Theta at Salem State College today. They were honored for their academic achievements as history majors.
- Sharon A. George, Gloucester
- Amy B. Quinn, Gloucester
- Natalie J. Paine, Medford
- Sarah E. Donaldson, Melrose
- Erin L. Rydgren, Salem
- Kate E. Swenson, Spencer
The ceremony also included the presentation of two scholarships. The McGlynn Scholarship, a scholarship in memory of Dr. Edna McGlynn that provides a graduate student the amount for one course in a master's program, was presented to Heather Cole of Norwood. The Charles Kiefer Scholarship, a $700 per semester memorial award for an undergraduate student, was presented to Sarah E. Donaldson of Melrose.
The Salem State College chapter of Phi Alpha Theta is an international honor society for historians. Members must complete 12 hours of course work in history, achieving a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.1. Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society that promotes the study of history by encouraging research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and thought among historians.
