SALEM- The 13th annual Salem Award for Human Rights and Social Justice ceremony will be held on Monday, April 4 at 5 p.m. at the Hawthorne Hotel. Stanley J. Usovicz, mayor of Salem, and Dr. Nancy D. Harrington, president of Salem State College, are hosting the event.
The award, presented this year to Fahima Vorgetts of Annapolis, Maryland, was established in 1992 by the Salem Witch Trials Tercentenary Committee and is sponsored by the City of Salem and Salem State College.
Vorgetts grew up in Afghanistan and became involved with women's rights movements at an early age. Trained as a chemist, she chose to become involved with educational programs for women. Vorgetts is a close supporter of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) and the Humanitarian Aid to Women and Children of Afghanistan (HAWCA). She is a board member of Women for Afghan Women.
The 3rd annual Salem Award Symposium will be held prior to the award presentation, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will consist of panelists from Salem State College, Boston University, Azad Architects, journalists and economic consultants.
Both events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Professor Anne Marie Harris at (978) 542-6823 or visit www.salemaward.org.
