SALEM - The coveted World Series trophy, claimed for the first time in 86 years this fall by the Red Sox, is on its way back to the North Shore.
Through the efforts of Dennis Drinkwater, a Salem State College alumnus and owner of Giant Glass, the trophy will be on display during the Salem State College Series appearance of author David Halberstam at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 5. Halberstam has written extensively about the Red Sox. His bestseller "Summer of '49" depicts an epic pennant race between the Red Sox and Yankees. Another bestseller, "Teammates" chronicles a 60-year friendship between Red Sox greats Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Bobby Doerr and Swampscott's own Johnny Pesky.
Halberstam won a Pulitzer Prize at the age of 30 for his reporting on the Vietnam War. His novels have focused on the media (The Powers That Be), the effect of Japan on our global economy (The Reckoning), the civil rights movement (The Children), and the Vietnam War (The Best and the Brightest).
Giant Glass is a major sponsor of the Salem State College Series, now in its 23rd year. The presenting sponsor of the Series is Bank of America.
Drinkwater is a member of the college's Class of '67. He was captain of the SSC baseball team in 1967.
Tickets are still available. Contact (978) 542-7555 or visit www.salemstate.edu/series.
