Salem, MA - Beating out 199 other actors from across New England, Salem State's Stephen Laferriere was named the Region One Irene Ryan Award Winner at the Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival, held at Rhode Island College this past week. He will go on to compete in the National Finals at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for the prestigious Irene Ryan National award and scholarship.
Nationwide, 600 colleges participate in the festival. Region One, comprised of New England colleges, was dominated by Salem State College, who had twelve nominees entering the festival, with nine in the semi-finals of 36 actors, and an astonishing total of six SSC nominees still standing in the final round of only sixteen remaining actors. Laferriere, who is best known to Salem theatre-goers as the beloved and cheeky Jack Frost of The Snow Queen, took the top spot.
In all, Salem State won four acting awards: Paul Melendy won Best Comedic Performance for the New England Theater Conference. Two partners, who accompanied nominees to perform scenes, were awarded Best Partner: Justin McKenna, and Lex Rogers. Alex Brown, who placed third overall, is an alternate for attending the finals in Washington, D.C., and Michael Wonson won an award for lighting design for King Lear, produced at Salem State College last spring.
