SALEM - Salem State College's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation will kick off a week long celebration of peace and social justice. Sen. Dianne Wilkerson will be the guest speaker at this year's event beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 24 in the Mainstage Auditorium on Lafayette Street. A candlelight vigil commemorating the inspirational life and work of Dr. King will take place later in the day at 6 p.m. Both are open to the public.
A "Mix It Up Dinner," where students are randomly seated throughout the cafeteria in an effort to expand their social circles will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26 in the Dining Commons on the college's main campus.
Dr. Alan Brown will lead a discussion entitled, "Surviving the Holocaust: A Personal Account" at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27 in the MLK room of the college's Ellison Campus Center. Dr. Brown will share the painful experiences of his capture and incarceration by the Germans during World War II. After losing his family, he came to the United States where he earned both a master's degree and doctorate at Harvard University.
The Human Race Machine will be available throughout the week in the Commons Dining area. This device allows participants to see what they would look like if their facial features were blended with other racial backgrounds.
