SALEM – Paintings by Salem State College graduate students will be exhibited in downtown Salem throughout July in over 3,000 square feet of prime office space donated by Mark Meche of Winter Street Architects.
Featuring the work of students in the Master of Arts in Teaching program, the "Mastering Paint" exhibit will open on Thursday, July 8, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first floor of the Newmark building located at 209 Essex Street. The art will remain on display through Saturday, July 31.
The downtown exposure, "loudly announces the college's vital role in the celebrated creative economy of northeastern Massachusetts," said Salem State College professor Mark Malloy. "As we have in other areas, we need to go beyond the bounds of the Salem State College campus and become part of downtown Salem and the Northshore community."
"'Mastering Paint' is a perfect storm of good reasons," Meche said. "It's an opportunity to develop a place for contemporary art in Salem's cultural fabric. It's good for our friend, Salem State College, particularly the art program, and it's an expression of our gratitude to Mark Malloy and his class for doing such a great job on the Salem Main Street logo."
Students in Malloy's Graphic Design Portfolio class submitted logo designs to the Salem Main Streets initiative in March. Main Streets selected the design by Kristen Petrie, of Topsfield, a Salem State College graduate art major. During that process, Malloy suggested to Meche that the college should have an exhibit downtown. "He immediately jumped at the idea," Malloy said.
In addition to the collaboration between Winter Street Architects and Salem State College, the downtown art exhibit involves efforts made by the Salem Partnership, the Salem Chamber of Commerce and Salem Main Streets.
