Salem, Mass. - Salem State College has received a $140,000 federal grant, renewable for three years, to create and implement a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program for middle school math teachers in Salem and Lynn. In sponsoring the first MAT middle school mathematics program in the state, Salem State College will offer teachers from the Salem and Lynn school districts graduate math courses in areas identified by the Massachusetts Frameworks. These courses and related work will result in teachers getting their master's degree in middle school mathematics. Those instrumental in the grant proposal were, Dr. Martha Hunt, Chair of the SSC department of mathematics, Julie Belock, Maura Murray, and Christopher Boucher, of the SSC mathematics department, Dick McGuinness of Lynn Public Schools, and Mimi Cooper of Northeast PALMS. Senator Fred Berry (D) Peabody, was especially supportive in securing the approval of the grant.
"Senator Berry has been a source of strong support to the Salem State College and the local community. He was able to envision the clear benefit of the college working in tandem with the local school districts," said Dr. Nancy D. Harrington, SSC President.
The grant will allow Salem State College to offer the program to a specified number of students and teachers within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The is to foster an in-depth appreciation and understanding of mathematics in middle school teachers. The goal is to provide students with teachers who are the most competent in the specialization of math.
