SALEM - Dr. Robin Cook and Christopher Reeve held a discussion on human stem cell research - its benefits as a possible cure for diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injury - that captivated a crowd of 2,000 at the O'Keefe Sports Complex last night.
In this season's final installment of the Salem State College Series, Reeve and Cook advocated for more research, seeing it as a road to medical miracles that is blocked by the political and religious climate in this country. "The most disturbing thing to me as a patient who would benefit is the disconnect between our government and the people," Reeve said.
Reeve, a former actor best known for his role as Superman, is paralyzed from a riding accident in 1995. Cook is a doctor and author of the medical thriller, "Seizure" which deals with the subject of stem cell research.
