SALEM, MA- Several students from Salem State College's Political Science department have been chosen to compete in the 50th Annual Conference of the Harvard National Model United Nations, during the weekend of February 12th.
This year SSC will send fourteen student ambassadors to the mock sessions, nearly doubling in size from last year's delegation. "The larger the team, the more important a country the students can represent. This year the students will represent Kenya, one of the most important countries of Eastern Africa," said Elizabeth Coughlan, Professor of Political Science at SSC.
Students participating in the event are Jennifer Ritter, Carlos Camelo, Chuck Whitaker, Alejandra Caro, Jude Verge, Melissa Zardas, Norman Castillo, Kelly Moriarty, Katey Peterson, Erin Basler, Sung-un Kim, Christopher Coimbra, Shawn Anderson, and Donesia Joseph.
With twice as many students participating, the department faced challenges in raising enough funds for each student. This year the student's weekend is being funded by the Political Science Department, the Student Government Association, and the Department of Arts and Sciences.
The Conference of the Harvard National United Nations is the most celebrated of all of the college level Model UN assemblies. Over 2,000 college students and advisors participate in the competition, which draws candidates worldwide.
