SALEM – Salem State College President Nancy D. Harrington has named Cynthia McGurren, a native of Methuen , as the college's interim Vice President of Institutional Advancement. She replaces Terry Conrad, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, who retired on Dec. 31.
Her appointment was approved Wednesday, Feb. 4, by the Salem State College Board of Trustees.
McGurren had served as acting Vice President of Institutional Advancement in 1996 but left the college to accept a position as District Coordinator for Rep. John Tierney. She returned to Salem State in 1999 as Special Assistant to the President. Among her responsibilities was the oversight of the popular Salem State College Series. McGurren, who received her bachelor's degree in Public Relations from Salem State College in 1983, is credited with elevating the speaker series to national prominence. Recent speakers include former President Clinton, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, soccer legend Mia Hamm, activist Jane Goodall, and actress/director Goldie Hawn.
"Cynthia's handling of the Series has been exemplary," said president Nancy D. Harrington. "She has been a key player in the development of Salem State and has risen to every challenge. She will rise to this one."
McGurren was also the Director of College Relations at Salem State from 1986 to 1996.
A member of the Catholic Charities North advisory board, McGurren was honored as Business Woman of the Year in 2002 by the Salem Chamber of Commerce. In 2001, Help for Abused Women and Their Children honored McGurren as the recipient of its Community Service Award.
McGurren is the daughter of Jacqueline McGurren and the late William F. McGurren Jr. She is a graduate of Presentation of Mary Academy in Methuen.
A former member of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, McGurren is an active member of the First Church Congregational in Swampscott. She resides in Swampscott with her husband Michael Sheffer and daughters Colby and Madison.
