The votes are in at Salem State College Statewide contest picks top book

SALEM, Mass.- "Jackie and Me" (Avon Books) by Dan Gutman of Haddonfield, New Jersey was announced as the winner of the twenty-eighth annual Massachusetts Childrens Book Award (MCBA) on Friday, April 2, at Salem State College. The book was voted the favorite out of the list of 25 nominated titles.
Honor Book winners included "Dork in Disguise" by Carol Gorman (Harper Collins), "The Two Princesses of Bamarre" by Gail Carson Levine (Harper Collins), "The Wanderer" by Sharon Creech (Harper Collins) and "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli (Random House).
Sponsored by Salem State College, the MCBA program was designed to encourage children in grades four, five and six to read quality literature. Participating children are required to read at least five books from the list of nominated books and vote for their favorite.
This year 156 Massachusetts schools took part in the program, with a total of 6,022 students reading and voting.
