SALEM – A tribute to Arthur T. Gerald Jr., the associate dean of the Learning Center and Multicultural Affairs at Salem State College, has raised over $20,000 for scholarship awards.
Gerald, of Lynn, was honored for his many years of good work and influence Saturday, Feb. 7, in the college's North Campus Dining Commons. The event, part of Black History Month, attracted 350 attendees including U.S. Rep. John Tierney (Salem State's class of 1973), and raised money to fund a new scholarship in Gerald's name. The scholarship will benefit minority students at Salem State College.
Fatima Abdalla, a senior nursing major, told the gathering that without Gerald, she would not be a Salem State College student. "I didn't have the best grades coming out of high school," she said. "I was not accepted at Salem State. Then I got a letter from Arthur Gerald's office encouraging me to apply again, this time through his Learning Center Program. This year I will graduate with honors."
"He has touched the lives of so many members of this community," said Eileen O'Brien, assistant director of Alumni Affairs. "It was a group of his former students that decided to establish this scholarship fund. Honoring him this way was an expression of their gratitude."
