SALEM -- Salem State College has scheduled several community events
to celebrate Earth Day on Monday, April 12.
The theme "Creating Sustainable Communities" is designed to present information about environmental concerns facing local, state, national and global communities. Faculty and students from the college, along with activists and community representatives from Health Link organized this year's program. They will be on hand throughout the college's scheduled events.
On April 22, 1970, Americans demonstrated on parks and streets across the United States demanding a healthy, sustainable environment. The celebration of that first nationwide environmental protest is considered by many to be the birth of the modern environmental movement in the United States. In 1990, Earth Day became a global event, with 200 million people from 141 nations participating in activities dedicated to raise awareness about the dangers of environmental degradation and to promote a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone. While the official date of Earth Day is April 22, celebrations across the world are usually scheduled throughout the month of April.
