23rd Academic Convocation slated at Salem State College
October 4, 2004
English scholar and math major address SSC and the community
SALEM, Mass. - Richard Elia, a professor of English at Salem State College, and Jennifer Maher, a SSC senior mathematics major, will speak during the College's 23rd convocation ceremony on Monday, October 4, in the Mainstage Auditorium at 11:30 a.m.
As the keynote speaker, Elia will consider the Latin words affiliated with the root of convocation, "convocare," meaning to call together, and "admonere," meaning to remember. In doing this, Elia will call out to the community to recall and appreciate the quality of Salem State College, its faculty and, most importantly, its students.
Jennifer Maher, of Marblehead, holds the highest grade point average of all SSC seniors at this time. A math major, she is in other ways an atypical college student. A high school dropout, Maher arrived at SSC through a somewhat circuitous route, and it is this educational journey that forms the basis of her convocation address. As Maher's own experience proves, it is not where one's education begins, but rather that it lead somewhere.
College president Dr. Nancy Harrington will make opening remarks, and students in the honors program will be recognized. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 978-542-6240.
