Computer science program granted national recognition

Karen Cady at 978-542-7500, Director, College Relations

SALEM, Mass. - Recognized as the first of its kind in the state college system to achieve this status, the Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information Studies program at Salem State College was recently awarded accredited status. The program at Salem State was reviewed by the Computing Accreditation Commission, one of four divisions of ABET Inc., the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology.

SSC Professor Joseph Kasprzyk, who chaired the program's self-study process, considers this approval "as validation of the high quality standards of our program." He applauds the peer review process and points out that attaining accreditation certifies that the Salem State program "imparts best practices in software development and system design to our students." The accreditation also validates the quality of faculty competency and level of currency in the technology field.

Salem State College joins UMass Lowell, UMass Dartmouth, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Northeastern University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in offering a similarly accredited computer studies program in Massachusetts. There are currently 126 students at Salem State enrolled in this major.
