SALEM - In celebration of its rich student diversity, Salem State College is planning to commemorate Haiti's bicentennial at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20 in the college's Ellison Campus Center.
Gerdes Fleurant, a retired professor of sociology at Salem State, will deliver the keynote address. The celebration will include the singing of the Haiti national anthem, remarks from Salem State College graduate Erga Dormevil and student Sonja DeCeuz, and Haitian folklore dancing by the Fantezi Kreyol Dance Company.
"Haiti's bicentennial represents freedom," said Shawn Newton, assistant director of multicultural affairs, whose office is co-sponsoring the event with the Office of the President and the Alumni Affairs office. "Even with a nation that is dealing with economic challenges coupled with civil unrest, Haitians have a great deal to celebrate. The majority of Haitians remain steadfast in their commitment to move forward."
