SALEM – A group of 40 nursing students from the Japanese Red Cross Hiroshima College of Nursing are studying at Salem State College this week.
According to Salem State College professor emeritus Joanne Evans, the Japanese students are taking part in the annual summer study program, sponsored by the college's School of Nursing. "They're here to learn more about the United States health care system," Evans said.
On Wednesday morning, Aug. 11, the Japanese students will attend classes at Salem State's Central Campus. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., they will split into two groups with half of the students heading to the pediatric unit of North Shore Children's Hospital in Salem and the other half going to Winchester Hospital. "The students have been spending mornings in our classrooms and visiting various hospitals in the afternoons to get a real feel for how our hospitals work," Evans explained.
The students are planning a visit with Salem State College president Nancy Harrington at noon Wednesday before departing for North Shore Children's Hospital and Winchester Hospital.
