SALEM, Mass.— The Salem State College Series presents Jamling Norgay and Peter Hillary, Mount Everest climbers and sons of the first men to conquer Everest, to kick off this year's Series. Hilary and Norgay will present a special multi-media presentation preceding the release of the National Geographic documentary of their climb, which is scheduled to air in the United States this May. Hillary and Norgay have been speaking publicly for National Geographic since their May 2002 revisit and climb of Mount Everest. The documentary was made on the 50th anniversary of their fathers' 1953 conquest of the mountain. Both Hillary and Norgay are experienced climbers who have separately scaled Everest prior to their 2002 exhibition. Norgay is the author of the newly released book titled, Touching My Father's Soul. In it he ties in his Buddhist belief and the Sherpa culture. Norgay was also the climbing leader of the 1996 IMAX film, Everest, an exhibition that was made famous in Jon Krakauer's best selling book, Into Thin Air. Hillary appeared via satellite on ABC's Good Morning America during his exhibition in Antarctica and has also been a guest on NBC's Late Show with David Letterman. An accomplished writer, he has had his works published in the New York Times and various other newspapers across the country. Also slated for this year's Series are wellness pioneer, Dr. Christiane Northrup and former New York City mayor, Rudy Guiliani. Northup, known for her visionary empowering approach to women's wellness, will speak to a sold out audience on Wednesday, April 9th. The North Shore Medical Center is the feature sponsor of Dr. Northrup's event. "As a leading provider of women's health services and a close partner of Salem State College, we are pleased to help sponsor this lecture," said Robert G. Norton, President and CEO, North Shore Medical Center. Rudy Guiliani, the man who brought a declining New York City back to greatness during his eight years as mayor, will close out the 21st season on Thursday, May 1st with a presentation entitled: "Leadership in Difficult Times." Fleet, the college's long-time partner in bringing the Series to the North Shore, will again be the presenting sponsor. "Fleet is pleased to be the presenting sponsor of Salem State's outstanding lecture series," said Margaret Albert, Fleet's Senior Manager of Community Relations and Sponsorship. Limited tickets are still available for the Norgay and Hillary presentation on Tuesday, March 18 as well as the Guiliani presentation on Thursday, May 1st by calling the Salem State box office at (978) 542-7555 or online at sscseries@salemstate.edu. |
