| SALEM - Salem State College will use a $1.4 million federal grant to educate teachers in Malden, Medford and Everett on modern technologies in the classroom. The "Project Learn" grant, secured by Rep. John Tierney of Salem, will be implemented over a three-year period beginning this month. " Technology plays such an integral part in the day-to-day classroom instruction of our children," Tierney said. "I am pleased that Salem State recognized that not all school districts have the financial resources to provide their students with this opportunity. This grant worth over $1 million, will enhance the education of children in Medford, Everett and Malden. This grant highlights the unique partnership the federal government can have with local communities and the faculty and staff at Salem State are to be commended for their dedication in making this grant a reality." The program is designed to increase K-12 teachers' proficiency in the use of modern day technologies to ensure all students meet the challenging state academic achievement standards. "We're delighted to receive this important grant," said Diane Lapkin, vice president of academic affairs. "This partnership will allow us to remain on the cutting edge of educational technology." According to Greg Carroll, the program coordinator who teaches at the college, Salem State is the only Massachusetts college to receive the federal funds for this project.
