A professor of mathematics, Abuzahra served as advisor to the Mathematics Society at Salem State for many years. "He has shown a willingness to counsel and instruct students beyond his normal duties," said Salem State College president Nancy Harrington. "His daily classroom work carried with it enthusiasm, conviction and a genuine concern for students."

Harrington also noted Abuzahra's "considerable research, especially in the Arabic countries where he has lectured and published."

Previous to his arrival at Salem State College in September, 1970, Abuzahra taught in the state university system of New York for several years and had work experience in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. He obtained a doctorate in mathematics at Syracuse University in 1971.
