SALEM, Mass. - In an effort to promote a healthy lifestyle and to raise money for local charities, Salem State College will host the sixth annual North Shore Wellness Fair and 5K Road Race/Fun Walk Sunday, April 28 at the O'Keefe Sports Complex, 220 Canal St.
With nearly 100 health and fitness exhibitors reserving booths, the event is expected to draw a crowd of 2,000. "We had a very modest beginning in 1997 when we held a health fair for our students in the gym," said event coordinator Joe Dunn, Sr.. "We had 20 booths and only a few outside vendors. By our third year we were joined by the City of Salem and over 1,500 people attended."
Free blood pressure testing, cholesterol screening and fitness evaluations will be ongoing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be activities, entertainment and prize drawings for all ages.
Several Salem State College student volunteers from the Sport, Fitness and Leisure Studies Department are involved with organizing the event. They will also be available to answer questions during the fair. Students from the Biology, Athletic Training and Nursing departments are also going to be on hand as well as the campus police.
Start time for the 5K Road Race/Fun Walk, which runs in conjunction with the fair, will be 9 a.m. Check-in time for the runners is 7 to 8:30 a.m. The first 125 entrants will receive a free T-shirt.
