Salem, Mass. - Attorney Frederick W. Clark Jr., of South Easton has been elected executive officer of the Massachusetts Council of State College Presidents, effective July 1.
He replaces Dr. William F. O'Neil of Worcester, who has been serving in that capacity since 1996. Dr. O'Neil previously was president of the Massachusetts College of Art for 10 years of his 42-year career in public education.
The Council of Presidents (COP) is comprised of the presidents leading Massachusetts' nine state colleges: Salem State College, Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State College, Framingham State College, Massachusetts College of Art, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Westfield State College and Worcester State College.
COP traces its roots back 40 years, to the single Board of Trustees that once governed all state colleges in Massachusetts. Over the years, COP has evolved as an advocacy group for the system, public higher education in general and state colleges in particular. The unions have further shaped the role of the COP over the years, as it has become an official level where contracts are managed with the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education.
Mr. Clark, president of the John Joseph Moakley Charitable Foundation, is past district director of the late congressman's 9th Congressional District. He has served on the Bridgewater State College Board of Trustees for the past eight years, and has been its chair since 1998. Clark is a 1983 Bridgewater graduate with a bachelor's degree in political science.
