Salem, Mass. - A month-long restoration process has begun on the "Chronicles of Salem" mural in the lobby of Meier Hall, on Salem State College's North Campus. SSC alumna Tracie Fitzgerald '02 and art major Elisabeth Soferr are working with two professional art conservationists on the project.
The mural, which was sponsored by the SSC Alumni Association and painted by Robert Larter of the art department, was installed in the lobby of Meier Hall in 1966. Over the years, exposure to the sun has resulted in some deterioration and discoloration to the varnish. The restoration involves meticulous removal of the varnish and cleaning of the surface, followed by a new application of varnish.
The mural chronicles the evolution of Salem State College from 1854 through the '60s, against the backdrop of the early history of the commonwealth and city of Salem. The late President Frederick A. Meier dedicated the mural in September 1966.
