SALEM, Mass. - As the result of an assignment in her public relations class, a senior communications major at Salem State College is helping the Red Cross address a blood shortage problem.
The project assignment for Janet Dionne of Salem was to pick an organization, identify a problem, and devise a public relations plan to address it.
Dionne chose the American Red Cross. The problem that was identified was a shortage of blood. Dionne's public relations plan was to use the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks as an inspiration for people to donate blood. She proposed that during the three weeks leading up to the anniversary, every donor would receive a red, white and blue candle. The candles were to be lit on the night of the anniversary.
Dionne's "Candles Across America" campaign was accepted and implemented by the New England Region Red Cross. In a written statement the Red Cross said, "From this experience, Janet's idea to honor blood donors as heroes is born. It also serves as a reminder that blood donors are needed year-round."
