SALEM - Salem State College will commemorate the official start of its Central Campus building project when college administrators and local elected officials assemble for a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, June 10.
The ceremony (outside of Building One on Central Campus) will mark the launching of Phase One of Salem State College's most significant building project in its history. Local dignitaries planning to attend are Salem Mayor Stan Usovicz, Sen. Fred Berry, Acting Governor Jane Swift, Sen. Bruce Tarr and Dr. Judith Gill, the Chancelor of the Board of Higher Education.
The $13 million Phase One construction targets the renovation of Building One for the School of Business, the Music Department and Information Technology. Building One will also house academic and administrative areas as well as service facilities. Phase One is expected to be completed by fall 2003.
The College's ambitious Central Campus renovation will transform the 37.5-acre former GTE/Sylvania site into new facilities for the art and business schools.
Once Phase Two is completed, Central Campus will be home to the School of Business, Department of Music, Theater and Speech Communications, Center for Creative and Performing Arts, Winfisky Art Gallery, environmental labs of the School of Arts and Sciences, Information Technology, Facilities Department, Shipping and Receiving. A food court and several support spaces are also planned.
