SALEM, Mass. - A team of six Salem State College students have claimed first-place honors in a recent leadership competition sponsored by the NorthEast Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls.
The Salem State team received the "Student Award for Leadership Training" for its 30-page plan and presentation on Residence Hall Association (RHA) improvement. "It's an amazing accomplishment given the fact that RHA is only three-years-old at Salem State," said Mathew R. Chetnick, the college's associate director of residence life. "We're a small college competing against bigger schools with more established RHAs, like Syracuse (University)."
Salem State's competition "bid" outscored bids from the University of Buffalo, Syracuse University, New York University and Bridgewater State College."
Members of the team are Nina Caliguiri of Townsend, Kat Lima of Newburyport, P.J. Murray of North Conway, N.H., Sterling Blonder of Longmeadow, Lianne Duffy of Tewksbury and Lindsay Vrabel of Southbridge.
"This accomplishment shows employers that we recognize the importance of leadership training," Chetnick said. "Employers today look at more than a college graduate's grade point average. The biggest skill they seek is leadership."
By virtue of its regional victory, Salem State will be one of eight teams competing at the National Conference at North Carolina State University in May.
