SALEM, Mass. - Students from 10 North Shore high schools took part in Salem State College's annual history conference Thursday, May 16.
Sponsored by the History Department, the conference challenged local students to debate the pros and cons of current event issues, using history as the basis of their arguments. The students broke up into sub groups of pro and con to debate the following five questions:
- With immersion and other techniques now available, is the concept of bilingual education now the best means of educating non-English speaking children in the United States?
- Have governmental anti-terrorism actions since September 2001, such as luggage and body searches at transit centers and border crossings and scans using data-based individual photographs, become as great a threat to the personal freedom and quality of life of American citizens as terrorism itself?
- Should the U.S. limit its foreign policy initiatives to try to minimize the alienation of other peoples and resultant hostility toward, and possible attacks upon the U.S. and its population?
- If equitably enforced, are dress codes for high school students more important in helping to avoid acts/incidents of socially irresponsible and offensive behavior than they are a threat to a student's right to freedom and expression?
- In such times as major societal crisis as an economic depression, the events of Sept. 11, 2001, or the devastation stemming from natural disasters, should government aid focus primarily on helping businesses instead of victimized citizens?
