SALEM, Mass. -- An environmental career fair, research posters developed by Salem State College students and artwork created by Salem pre-school and elementary school students are all part of Earth Day 2002 activities planned for Monday, April 22 at Salem State College.

The activities, co-sponsored by HealthLink, will be capped by an evening ceremony honoring acting Governor Jane Swift and Jan Schlictmann, president of the Wenham Lake Watershed Association. Schlictmann is also the lawyer portrayed in the film "A Civil Action."

During the ceremony (7 p.m. in Charlotte Forten Hall) SSC president Nancy Harrington will present Friend of the Earth awards in recognition of Swift's and Schlictmann's commitment to preserving the environment. Gina McCarthy, assistant secretary for Pollution Prevention in the Office of Environmental Affairs, will accept the award for on behalf of Swift.

Activities during the day will include a poster presentation by Salem State students 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Dining Commons and Charlotte Forten Hall. President Harrington will award $50 cash prizes to 10 students whose posters best depict a link between health and the environment.

Dr. Nancy Harrington recognizes Salem State College student Bill Hardigan for his prize-winning poster at last year's Earth Day celebration.

An environmental internship and careers fair will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Career Services lounge in the Ellison Campus Center. The groups which will be represented include HealthLink, Ipswich Watershed Council, Mass Audubon, MASSPIRG, Mass Society for Conservational Biology, Mass Waterwatch, Nautilus Environmental Services, Inc., and Salem Sound 2000 among others.

Environmental art work created by students from the Bates, Bowditch, Horace Mann, Phoenix and Saltonstall elementary schools in Salem and the Salem State College preschool will be on display at 6:30 p.m. in Forten Hall. Art created by Salem State students and professors will also be displayed, and a dessert reception will be available for all visitors.

The idea of Earth Day was first suggested in 1969 in California. It was proposed that a day be set aside to "remember Earth's tender seedlings of life and people; a day for planting trees and grass and flowers, for cleaning streams and wooded glens."

All events are free and open to the public. For more information contact Krishna Mallick at: 978-542-6298, or e-mail: kmallick@salemstate.edu.
